Modjaji Books logo

Modjaji Books is an independent feminist press based in Cape Town and a member of the International Alliance of Independent Publishers. We publish books by southern African women writers – novels, short stories, memoir, biography, poetry, essays, narrative non-fiction by women writers. The history of publishing in South Africa is enmeshed with the culture of resistance that flourished under apartheid. We continue to promote local women’s voices, and are pleased to note that this focus has now been taken up by most trade publishers in South Africa. Modjaji titles are true to the spirit of Modjaji, the rain queen: a powerful female force for good, growth, new life, regeneration. Our books are distributed locally by Protea Boekehuis into the trade. African Books Collective distributes our titles internationally.
