The nine indigenous language National Lexicography Units, supported by the Pan South African Language Board, have a Constitutional and Legislative mandate to develop dictionaries and other material in our indigenous languages which when used “will elevate their status and advance their use” while ensuring that “no language is disadvantaged over any other”. The material we produce is designed to create a more multilingual and socially cohesive society while supporting IL speakers to learn English. Copyright in our dictionaries is held by the Units on behalf of the State. The dictionaries are a national language resource in our languages. We are currently developing material in the San, Nama and Khoi languages.
